From the Ground Up!

Build a Community, One Square Foot at a Time

What if your child could build an entire town from scratch while learning math, science, engineering, economics, geography, government, entrepreneurship, and real-world problem-solving?

Welcome to From the Ground Up!, an immersive 18-week, hands-on homeschool curriculum that transforms a single square foot of cardboard into a thriving miniature community.

Designed for homeschool families, homeschool co-ops, microschools, learning pods, and project-based classrooms, this interdisciplinary curriculum invites children ages 6–14 to become architects, engineers, entrepreneurs, city planners, community leaders, and founding citizens of their very own town.

No memorization marathons. No traditional tests. Just meaningful, creative, hands-on learning that grows week after week.

One Square Foot. Endless Possibilities.

Every great community starts somewhere.

In Week 1, each learner receives a 12-by-12-inch plot of land, a family of wooden peg people, a few building materials, three sheep, and a limited food supply.

Their challenge? Survive, build, grow, and eventually create a functioning town.

Over the next 18 weeks, students design and construct homes, farms, wells, roads, bridges, businesses, government buildings, clinics, schools, and energy systems. Along the way, they encounter real challenges involving resource management, property rights, supply and demand, engineering design, public safety, leadership, and cooperation.

Every building requires planning. Every decision has consequences. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to think critically and find creative solutions.

By the final week, learners celebrate their achievements with a Grand Opening, complete with a miniature town, maps, community history, and a portfolio showcasing their learning.

An Integrated STEAM & Social Studies Curriculum

From the Ground Up! combines multiple academic subjects into one engaging, project-based learning experience.

  • STEM & Engineering: Design structures, construct weight-bearing bridges, investigate simple machines, build water systems, and experiment with electrical circuits.

  • Mathematics: Practice measurement, area, perimeter, multiplication, ratios, scale drawings, budgeting, data collection, and real-world mathematical reasoning.

  • Civics & Government: Create a town charter, hold elections, discuss property rights, establish community rules, and explore the responsibilities of local government.

  • Economics & Entrepreneurship: Learn about scarcity, budgeting, bartering, currency, supply and demand, competition, business plans, and community marketplaces.

  • Geography & Urban Planning: Develop maps, identify natural resources, design transportation networks, consider zoning, and plan sustainable community growth.

  • Language Arts: Strengthen writing, public speaking, persuasive argument, active listening, journaling, and communication through weekly Town Meetings.

  • Art & Creative Design: Construct miniature buildings, design community landmarks, create signs, decorate structures, and bring an original world to life.

18 Weeks of Hands-On Discovery

Three Learning Bands, One Shared Adventure

One of the most exciting features of From the Ground Up! is its multi-age homeschool curriculum design.

Rather than separating siblings into different lessons, the course brings everyone together around the same project while adjusting the academic expectations.

Settlers | Ages 6–8

Young learners explore through construction, counting, storytelling, drawing, measuring, and imaginative play.

Builders | Ages 9–11

Intermediate learners apply mathematics, experiment with engineering designs, maintain records, develop maps, and investigate cause and effect.

Founders | Ages 12–14

Older students engage in advanced planning, mathematical analysis, economic reasoning, persuasive writing, civic discussions, and evidence-based decision-making.

Optional high school extension activities provide additional challenges for older siblings.

Learn Through Questions, Not Just Answers

Every weekly lesson includes a Socratic Town Meeting, where learners debate authentic community challenges:

  • Who should own the water?

  • Should a town limit how many businesses can open?

  • Who should pay to build a bridge?

  • What responsibilities should a government have?

  • What happens when resources become scarce?

  • How should neighbors respond when disaster strikes?

These conversations encourage critical thinking, respectful disagreement, leadership, problem-solving, and the ability to support an opinion with evidence.

What Makes This Homeschool Curriculum Different?

Truly hands-on learning: Students build physical models and apply concepts immediately instead of simply reading about them.

Cross-curricular education: One evolving project integrates STEM, social studies, economics, civics, art, and language arts.

Screen-free core activities: Children learn through building, experimenting, writing, discussion, and imaginative play.

Multi-age instruction: Three differentiated learning bands make the course especially useful for homeschooling multiple children.

Portfolio-based assessment: Learners demonstrate growth through their Town Ledger, maps, Building Permits, engineering tests, community projects, and final presentation rather than traditional exams.

Flexible instruction: Eighteen approximately 90-minute weekly lessons can also be divided into two shorter sessions.

Budget-conscious materials: Most construction supplies can be recycled or collected from common household materials, with an estimated materials budget of approximately $25–$60 if starting from scratch.

Perfect For

Homeschool families, mixed-age homeschool co-ops, microschools, enrichment programs, project-based learning classrooms, interdisciplinary STEM programs, and creative educators looking for an engaging alternative to traditional textbook instruction.

Facilitator Guide & Student Workbook

The course includes structured facilitator instruction, weekly challenges, differentiated learning activities, discussion questions, assessment guidance, and printable student resources for documenting the development of each town.

Parents and educators do not need specialized backgrounds in engineering, economics, or government. The Facilitator Guide provides the framework for guiding learners through each experience while encouraging independence, curiosity, and creativity.

Build More Than a Town. Build a Thinker.

From the Ground Up! challenges learners to ask questions, test ideas, negotiate differences, solve problems, and discover how communities function.

By the end of the 18 weeks, they will have more than a miniature town. They will have an evolving record of their mathematical thinking, engineering discoveries, entrepreneurial ideas, civic decisions, and creative accomplishments.

Give your learners one square foot of land and watch what they build.
