I'm Moving Out! A Hands-On Life Skills Curriculum for Teens | High School Financial Literacy, Independent Living & Adulting Course (Grades 11 to 12)
Prepare teens for life after high school with confidence.
I'm Moving Out! is a complete, project-based high school life skills curriculum that teaches students how to successfully transition from living at home to independent adulthood. Designed for Grades 11 to 12 (ages 16 to 18), this engaging 18-week semester course (1/2 elective credit) combines financial literacy, career readiness, independent living, critical thinking, and real-world problem solving into one comprehensive learning experience.
Unlike traditional personal finance courses, students do not simply read about adulthood. They build a personalized Launch Plan using real apartments, real jobs, real budgets, real paychecks, and real cost-of-living data. Throughout the semester, learners create a professional portfolio that prepares them to confidently take the next step into adult life.
Students will learn how to:
Build a realistic monthly budget
Read pay stubs and understand taxes
Open bank accounts and manage credit wisely
Create an emergency fund
Find and compare apartments
Read and understand rental leases
Plan moving expenses
Write a resume and cover letter
Complete job applications and master interviews
Understand workplace expectations
Cook affordable meals
Clean and maintain a home
Perform basic vehicle maintenance
Manage time effectively
Understand health insurance and important legal documents
Protect their digital identity
Create and defend a complete independent living plan
The course emphasizes hands-on projects, Socratic discussions, reflective journaling, role-playing activities, budgeting exercises, simulations, field experiences, and authentic problem solving instead of memorization and traditional tests. Students demonstrate mastery through discussion, reflection, and the completion of their semester-long Launch Binder portfolio.
Ideal for:
Homeschool families
Public high schools
Private schools
Charter schools
Microschools
Co-ops
Career readiness programs
Family and Consumer Science (FACS)
Personal Finance electives
Independent Study programs
Teaching life skills can be challenging because there is no single curriculum that combines financial literacy, employment readiness, housing, budgeting, and independent living into one cohesive program. I'm Moving Out! provides educators with a complete semester plan that is ready to implement while still allowing flexibility for local resources and student interests.
The Facilitator Guide includes weekly learning objectives, materials lists, hands-on projects, guided Socratic discussions, journal prompts, games, facilitator notes, assessment guidance, field trip ideas, and standards alignment, while the companion Student Workbook contains the worksheets, templates, and journal pages needed to complete each activity.
Educators benefit by having:
An organized 18-week semester curriculum
Minimal lesson planning required
Authentic, real-world learning experiences
Flexible implementation for classrooms or homeschool settings
Project-based assessments instead of traditional testing
High student engagement through simulations and practical activities
A portfolio-based culminating project that demonstrates mastery of real-world adult living skills
By the end of the course, students leave with more than knowledge. They have created a realistic, personalized plan for moving into adulthood with confidence, practical experience, and decision-making skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
