Reef Madness! Coral Reefs and the Ocean
Hands-On Ocean Science Curriculum for Grades 3 to 5
Facilitator Guide & Student Workbook
By Tricia Siletti MEd MS | From Earth to Sky Education

Dive into ocean science with Reef Madness!, a hands-on coral reef curriculum for grades 3 to 5. Designed for homeschool families and small homeschool co-ops, this engaging course brings marine science to life through experiments, creative projects, meaningful discussion, and discovery.

Join Gus, a confident and comical parrotfish, as learners investigate salty seawater, ocean currents, deep-sea habitats, coral growth, and the creatures that call reefs home. Gus has plenty of ideas, but he does not always get the science right! Children use evidence from their own activities to challenge his assumptions, explain their discoveries, and practice thinking like scientists.

Ten Ocean Science Lessons

Learners explore:

  • Planet Ocean: Investigate how much of Earth is covered by water.

  • Why Is the Sea Salty? Experiment with saltwater, density, and floating.

  • Waves, Currents and Tides: Discover how ocean water moves.

  • Down, Down, Deep: Explore ocean zones and life beneath the surface.

  • Mapping the Mystery: Model how scientists map the hidden seafloor.

  • Meet the Coral: Investigate coral animals and build a clay coral polyp.

  • How Reefs Grow: Model reef formation and explore coral growth.

  • Who Lives Here? Discover reef biodiversity and connected food webs.

  • Masters of Disguise: Investigate camouflage and animal adaptations.

  • Build a Reef: Engineer and test a model reef against a simulated storm.

More Than an Ocean Unit Study

Reef Madness! connects earth science, life science, physical science, engineering, mathematics, geography, writing, and art. Learners make predictions, measure results, record observations, build models, and defend their ideas through guided Socratic discussion.

The included Student Workbook, called the Reef Journal, provides space for drawings, data tables, graphs, and reflections. Children also create a Reef Deck of animal cards for the Reef Rumble strategy game and showcase their learning through a culminating Reef Expo, with seven project options.

What Is Included?

  • Ten complete lessons with facilitator background and activity directions.

  • Discussion prompts, common misconceptions, and troubleshooting guidance.

  • Adaptation notes for younger and older learners.

  • Student Reef Journal workbook.

  • Materials list, safety guidance, and flexible pacing options.

  • Two learning checkpoints and a four-level project rubric.

  • Games, glossary, answer notes, and standards alignment.

  • Optional online resources, field trip ideas, and further learning suggestions.

Flexible, Screen-Free Homeschool Science

Each lesson takes approximately 60 minutes and can be divided into two 30-minute sessions. Teach one lesson weekly for an 11 to 12 week course, including Reef Expo preparation and presentation.

Designed primarily for ages 8 to 11, the course includes adjustments for learners approximately ages 7 to 12. Activities use mostly household materials, with no aquarium or live animals needed. All core lessons can be completed without screens.

No prior marine science knowledge is required to teach. Assessment focuses on discussion, journals, experiments, and projects instead of tests.

Bring the ocean to your learning table with a coral reef unit study that turns curiosity into scientific discovery.
