YOU ARE HERE: A Hands-On High School Geography Course Facilitator Guide | Grades 9 to 12 | 18 Weeks | 0.5 Credit in World Geography

$40.00

Help your teen discover how the world works, starting with the place they call home. YOU ARE HERE is a hands-on high school geography curriculum that brings physical geography, human geography, and world cultures to life through creative projects, mapmaking, research, and meaningful discussion.

Designed for homeschool families and co-ops, this 18-week world geography course invites students to explore before they receive an explanation. They flatten orange peels to investigate map projections, model landforms with clay, study population patterns, and examine how location shapes cities, trade, borders, wealth, and power.

Along the way, students travel with fictional Great-Aunt Dot, whose weekly postcards contain one geographic mistake. Learners identify the error, investigate the facts, and write an evidence-supported reply, building research skills, critical thinking, and respectful communication.

Explore six engaging units:

  • Reading the World: Location, map skills, map projections, and topography.

  • The Physical Planet: Plate tectonics, water systems, weather, and climate.

  • People on the Planet: Population, migration, and cultural geography.

  • Making a Living: Settlement, trade, resources, and economic geography.

  • Borders and Power: Political boundaries, U.S. geography, and geopolitics.

  • Geography in Action: Natural hazards, digital mapping, and a culminating geography project.

Learning that connects the world to home

Students build a Home Base File, a geographic portrait of their hometown that explores its watershed, climate, population, settlement patterns, and natural hazards. A World Tour Passport introduces twelve world regions, while map-from-memory activities and unit checkpoints help learners recognize their progress.

The course concludes with the You Are Here Expo, where students share their learning through a research paper, travel guide, original board game, relief-map sculpture, podcast, documentary, or another meaningful project.

Practical support for parents and co-op teachers

The Facilitator Guide includes lesson background, materials lists, activity instructions, Socratic discussion plans, answer keys, assessment guidance, project rubrics, and pacing options. No geography expertise is required.

Choose the standard Explorer track or the more challenging Cartographer honors track. Follow the semester schedule or adapt the pacing for a full year, an intensive session, or a weekly co-op gathering. Assess learning through projects, discussions, field work, and portfolios.

The companion Student Guide is available as a FREE download at easyhomeschool.org.
